Evolution of Indian health
Generational Habits
With the increasing spending power of the newer generations, people are getting more conscious about a lot of aspects which otherwise would have been deprioritised. Healthy living is one such aspect which people are now increasingly becoming conscious about. The carefree approach to daily routine of past generations have taking it's long term toll as most diseases are genetically transmitted and makes the further generations weaker.
While diet forms a major part of healthy living, daily routine and mental wellness are equally important for a sustained healthy living.
How times evolved?
The earnings of people started increasing towards the late 20th century and this made them resort to all those habits which were initially occasional or more considered a part of luxury living. This habit formation essentially led to them overdoing things and later, picking up those diseases which were earlier a rarity. Diabetes, blood pressure became a very prevalent syndrome all of a sudden and once picked up, most of the times would also lead to genetic transmission. Consequentially, the later generations started suffering from a very young age while the per capita income continued to increase. This early outbreaks started bringing realisation into people about the need for healthy living. A gradual transmission started towards controlled dietary intake, calculated calorie conscious lifestyle. This became a business opportunity as well and new startups started flourishing. Cultfit, gold's gym, yoga bar became the darlings of Indian health 'freaks'. With this started communities and groups with like minded health conscious individuals. As expected, there are rebel groups as well preaching generational habits and need for preserving ancestral culture and lifestyles.
It would be wrong to have a biased opinion on either side, however, as long as the preachings lean towards the healthier side, I believe there is no problem with any of them. In the end, it's all about leaving a better routine and world for the future generations.
It's not just eating or staying fit anymore!
This being the positive shift, the negative side of the current generation is mental health. With a 13% increase in the past decade in the number of reported mental illness cases, the numbers are expected to be far greater as mental illness still remains a stigma or ignored by people. With increased earnings, comes the pressure of having to deliver greater things, fulfil family commitments and also save for a secure future. Mental health has become necessary to be made aware about and to be prioritised along with physical wellness.
It's important that the current generation makes the world a better place for the upcoming generations.
